勿读wù ㄨˋ。中文起源并不统一。该字就有多种源流说法。 1、《说文解字》：“勿，州里所建旗。象其柄，有三游。杂帛，幅半异。所以趣民，故遽，称勿勿。”。“州里所建旗”促民聚众是勿之范式。本义：犹勉勉也。如：《礼·祭义》：“勿勿诸其欲其飨之也。”。衍义：禁止。如：《论语》：“非礼勿视。”。 2、甲骨文的勿是会意字，右边像弓，旁边两小撇表示弓弦振动的样子勿的本意为引弓拨弦。引弓拨弦是勿之范式。本义表示劝阻、禁止，做否定词。相当于“不”。如：《论语》：“非礼勿听。”。 3、象形字。象刀溅血。是刎之初字。刀溅血是勿之范式。本义：切割。为与“刎”字意义细化。勿一般用作副词，表示“戒止、禁止、不要、拒绝，没有”等否定。相当于“不、毋、无”。
