Crushed ice will chill and melt in a cocktail rapidly and is used when more dilution is necessary.

Mix using the bar spoon - fill half of the glass with crush ice, place 2 long slices of cucumber and then top with crushed ice.

Some insist on using crushed ice or adding a shot of water, but in fact crushed ice doesn dilute the drink appreciably more or less than cubed.
