工程测量学为一种应用测量学原理，应用在各种工程上，例如道路、隧道、桥梁及住宅等，主要是将原本在工程图说上的设计图放样到现场，以利工程人员依照所放样的位置制做出。工程图纸上的设计图上的构造物，其放样的结果的正确性甚为重要，若错误可能导致工程甚大损失，工程测量所需成本对工程成本而言甚小，但重要性甚大。
