基期是一个基础期、起始期的概念，属于这期的有“入选样本股票”称为基期股票；规定的基日；规定的基日指数值（基期指数）。基期股票的市值在相当长的时间内是固定不变的。如以1995年的国民生产总值数字与1990年的数字对比以计算“八五”期间的发展速度时，1995年即为报告期，1990年即为基期。基是指统计基数，期是指统计时限。
