在研究全反射现象中，刚好发生全反射，即折射角为90度时的入射角是一个很重要的物理量，叫做临界角。光由水进入空气的临界角约为48.5°，从玻璃进入空气的临界角，随玻璃的成分不同而异，约在30°～42°之间。金刚石是23.7°。临界角 sin c/sin90°=n2/n1 c=arcsin n2/n1。其中，光从折射率为n1的介质射入折射率为n2的介质,且n1>n2。
