Along with the hypocrisy of power, Lou dramatizes a society of surveillance and internal espionage, in which deceit and pretense serve the spirit of freedom, fear and despair efface identity and warp morality, and the last refuge of conscience, in the face of oppressive order, is the commemoration of the victims.
