The sketch, a preparatory drawing for one of the vertical box assemblages that were a frequent theme of Judd's work at the time, could easily be mistaken for a floor plan of the building, a series of stacked volumes one atop the other.

Another bizarre feature of the pagoda is that, because the building tapers, with each successive square floor-plan being smaller than the one below, none of the vertical pillars that carry the weight of the building is connected to its corresponding pillar above.

The firm and its architect, NBBJ, looked at how fast people can walk and measured the diameter of the space from multiple angles. (An "infinity-loop"-shaped pathway slopes through the building, connecting employees to each other.) In addition, the floor plan is narrower than typical offices, keeping teams in sight range of one another.
