一年生草本，经过 秋、冬、夏的三个季节。高30一120厘米。叶鞘无毛；叶舌膜质，短小。全世界广泛栽培。我国北方各地均栽培产量极多。秋季采收果穗，晾晒，打下果实，除去杂质，取成熟果实(小麦)、未成熟果实(浮小麦)，晒干。其药味甘，性凉。小麦：养心安神，除烦。浮小麦：益气，除热，止汗。蒙药味甘，性凉、重、腻。滋补，接骨，镇“赫依协日”病。
